Kole first appeared as a prisoner of mad sun goddess Thia in NEW TEEN TITANS (second series) #9 [1985]. The gentle crystal spinner Kole Weathers gained powers as a product of her father's bizarre experiments. Kole was rescued by the Titans and grew close to the Titan, Jericho, before her untimely demise in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #12 [1985].

In the comic book series, Kole can spin crystal from thin air, as well as transform herself and others into crystal. Kole had no connections to Gnarrk, who was gone long before she met the Titans.

Gnarrk first appeared in TEEN TITANS #32-33 [1971]. A gentle Caveman out of his own time, Gnarrk bonded with the Titan, Lilith Clay. Gnarrk appeared in TEEN TITANS #39 and #50-52, where it was revealed he was engaged to Lilith. In TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #50 [1984], it was revealed that Gnarrk died under mysterious circumstances. Gnarrk's story was revised and retold in NEW TITANS #56 [1989].

Gnarrk earned his name because of his limited vocabulary. When the Titans first meant the teen neanderthal, the only word he repeated over and over was: "Gnarrk." Thus, that became his name. He was eventually educated by the Titans.

Dr. Light continues his bumbling persona from his comic book appearances with the Teen Titans.

The Titans World Tour brings them to the Arctic - where they tangle with Dr. Light yet again. Plus, we get a bonus of not one, but two, new characters with Kole and Gnarrk. And it's really the characters that propel this episode.

Although differing from their comic book counterparts, Kole and Gnarrk are quite endearing. Their relationship is very sweet without being cloying; That's a careful writing balance that Amy Wolfram brings to her scripts. She makes the characters instantly relatable. Much like other Titans' episodes, there's a metaphor here about friendship - and how new friends don't necessarily usurp old ones.

In addition to the friendship angle, Kole's Underworld is an exotic and interesting visual backdrop for the episode. And Dr. Light can always be relied on for menace and comedy in equal measures. Gnarrk also lends himself to comedy, with his simple nature and penchant for eating contests. The pronunciation of Gnarrk's name was also an amusing bit for longtime comic book readers. All these elements make KOLE is a sweet, exciting, adventuous romp. Grade: B+
