Aquaman

Alias: Arthur Curry or Orin

Aqualad's fear of fish
Aqualad's first appearance in ADVENTURE COMICS #269

Secret Origin of Aquaman

Prince Orin, heir to the throne of Atlantis, was abandoned on a reef to die in the receding tide. Saved by a dolphin, Porm, he was raised by her. A kindly lighthouse keeper taught him the ways and language of the surface world, and Orin took the lighthouse keeper's name – Arthur Curry - as his own. Growing up as protector of the ocean depths, Arthur soon earned the name Aquaman.

Later returning to Atlantis as King, Aquaman fell in love and married Mera, a beautiful princess from another dimension. Mera and Aquaman married and had a son, Arthur Jr. - who later died at the hands of Black Manta. Despite Arthur’s trials and tragedies, he continues to defend the deep as Aquaman.

Aquaman & Garth

Early in his career, Aquaman found an abandoned young boy named Garth. He took Garth in and helped him overcome his fear of marine life. Garth adopted the name Aqualad and became sidekick to the King of the Seas. After roaming the ocean depths with Aquaman (while attending school in Scotland by special arrangement), Aqualad returned to Atlantis as a permanent resident when Aquaman married Mera, the queen of an extra-dimensional water world.

Aqualad began dividing his time between Atlantis and the surface world as a member of the Teen Titans. Aquaman and Aqualad had a generally angst-free relationship, upset only by the occasional teenage rebellion. Garth was sometimes tempted into trouble by his fun-loving girlfriend, Tula. On another occasion, a falling out with Aquaman caused Aqualad to unearth the secrets of his parents, King Thar and Queen Berra of the Idylists. But Garth’s outbursts were always quickly forgiven by his supportive mentor.

Later, Garth was kidnapped by Aquaman’s father, Atlan, who helped Garth unlock his secret mystical birthright. Atlan trained Garth in his dimension, and taught him how to greatly augment his powers. Upon returning, Garth became the powerful aquatic adventurer known as Tempest. Garth has used his new mystical might in helping Aquaman defend Atlantis against numerous threats and incursions.

As Aquaman’s romantic relationship with Dolphin reached its end, Garth found himself attracted to the beautiful sea dweller. As Garth and Dolphin found themselves falling in love, they initially concealed their relationship from Aquaman, unsure of what his reaction would be. Their fears were ultimately unfounded. Eventually, Aquaman learned of their relationship and gave them his blessing.

Aquaman & Aquagirl II

After a genetic anomaly was introduced to the San Diego water supply, the California city sunk into the ocean. Teenager Lorena Marquez soon discovered that her body had been altered to survive the ocean depths. It wasn't long before Lorena allied with Aquaman as the newest Aquagirl.

Aquaman possesses enhanced strength, speed and durability as well as the ability to communicate directly with sea life. Also, he can swim underwater at rates up to 100 mph and withstand extremes of temperature and pressure.

Queen Berra & King Thar

A Monarch and Queen

Thar and Berra's history is detailed in TEMPEST #1 [1996]
The birth of Garth - from TEMPEST #1 [1996]

The Idylists - a group of pacifists living in self-exile from Atlantis - settled in the Hidden Valley over 4,000 years ago. They knew no violence; Peace and serenity were their way of life. King Thar came into power and ruled from Shayeris, the Idylist capital city. Thar had inherited much of his ancestor's mythic power, and practiced sorcery alongside his brother, Slizzath.

The history of Atlantis is fraught with a recurring theme: brother against brother. King Thar was no exception. Thar's brother Slizzath thought the power should be his and resented his brother ‘taking' it from him. Slizzath was denied his birthright because he dabbled in the black arts - practicing necromancy – the evocation of the dead. He was banished from the Hidden Valley but returned 20 years later with an army of undead soldiers. Thar assembled an armory of weapons, specifically designed to stop Slizzath.

The pacifist Idylists thought Thar was going insane. Thar's peace loving people revolted, killing their once-beloved king. Fearing the monarchy was tainted by foul violence, the Idylists banished his now-pregnant wife, Berra. Berra found her way to Atlantis and gave birth to a son - known she named Garth.

Before Thar died, he was able to use his magics to trap Slizzath in an other-dimensional prison. It was, however, an imperfect spell. Slizzath would be able to manipulate particular spells as a means of escape. Such a spell was Garth's birthright ritual spell he would perform to seal his mystical powers. Upon giving birth to Garth, Berra gazed upon his purple eyes, the Idylist mark of power. She knew he had the power and would one day evoke the birthright ritual spell, thus freeing Slizzath. Sadly, she left Garth to die.

Garth discovers the truth behind his parents in ADVENTURE COMICS #453-455 [1977]

Truths Buried

The Idylist recorded history made no mention of Slizzath's dark magics; When Garth investigated, the Idylist archives only made mention of King Thar's insanity and the Idlysist's subsequent revolt. Garth also believed he was left to die because the superstitious Atlanteans thought his purple eyes were a sign of inferiority. Garth would only learn the truth years later, when he would invoke his birthright ritual spell and become Tempest.

The Idylists sent word out that all babies born with purple eyes be cast out and left to die - so the ritual birthright spell could never be performed, which would in turn unleash Slizzath. Later, when the Idylists discovered Garth was alive, they lied to him about his past so he would not learn of his mystical heritage. Years later, when Atlan trained Garth in the mystic arts, his birthright - and the Idylist's deception - was made clear.

Berra was eventually welcomed back by the Idylists, and they kept themselves hidden from the rest of the sentient ocean-dwellers. Recurring attacks from Slizzath's undead army plagued the pacifist Idylists. This is what drove them into seclusion. Garth had long believed his mother to be dead. Garth was found by Aquaman, who took the boy in. Garth became Aqualad, and began an illustrious career as an adventurer working with both Aquaman and the Teen Titans.

Truths Revealed

Years later, Garth was whisked away by Aquaman's father, Atlan - a powerful mage who existed in another dimension. He told Garth his destiny was to become a powerful mage as well. Atlan trained Garth and taught him how to greatly augment his powers.

Garth has a tense reunion with his mother, Berra, in TEMPEST #3 [1997]

Upon his return, Garth encountered his uncle Slizzath, who had transformed himself using dark magic and became a demonic sea creature. Slizzath wanted to siphon Garth's mystical energies for his own dark purposes and free himself from imprisonment. Slizzath created a mystical a doppelganger of Tula, who was created to dupe Garth. Garth saw through the plan and was able to defeat Slizzath, and once and for all maintain a sense of closure about Tula's death. Garth also adopted a new identity as Tempest.

During this time, Garth also discovered his mother Berra was still alive, and living with a group of Idyllists. This forced Garth to confront his feelings of abandonment by his mother, and mother and son began to take tentative steps toward rebuilding their relationship.

Atlan

Atlan gives Garth his final test in
SHOWCASE '96 #1 [1996]
Garth's training with Atlan is explained
in TEMPEST #1 [1996]

Atlan's Origins

Atlan the Loner is a 3,000 year old mage distinguished from other Poseidonians by his blond hair, which the superstitious Atlanteans call a curse. A direct descendent of King Orin, Atlan was forced to wander the globe and discovered that the surface world had not been destroyed, as legend had detailed. This led his father, Honsu the Conqueror, to wage war on the surface world. The battles left the Atlanteans defeated and disgraced.

Over the next several centuries, Atlan himself became a powerful sorcerer and intellect, albeit an arrogant one. In search of power, Atlan insulted or disgraced a number of demons and gods and has felt their ire.

At some point in the past latter half of the century, Atlan visited the Atlantean Queen, Atlanna, whose husband Trevis, was unable to sire a child by her. Atlan appeared to Atlanna is a dreamlike vision and made love to her. Magically impregnated by Atlan's seed, Atlanna gave birth to a blond haired child that was condemned to death to bearing the unholy sign of Kordax. The infant survived and returned to Atlantis years later as Aquaman (who would eventually become Tempest's mentor).

Mystic Birthright

Some time ago, Atlan became aware of Garth's awesome magical potential. Atlan took the young hero and trained him in an alternate dimension for a number of months. Atlan was aware of Garth's destiny and heritage and was instrumental in convincing the young man to embrace this side of himself. Garth resisted at first, but was able to find truth in the teachings of the arrogant mage.

Garth was returned to his true dimension with new mystical powers and command over the elements of the ocean.

Atlan possesses precognitive skills, telepathy and is a master wizard, able to cast dozens of different spells. He is also immortal and impervious to harm. He can be captured and contained by equally powerful mystical force.

Dolphin

Secret Origin of Dolphin

Dolphin was apparently once a surface child, stolen away by aquatic aliens and mutated to undersea life. She was freed by Kordax, a blond-haired green-skinned former Atlantean. When two US Navy men investigated the sunken wreckage of the ship USS Arabesque, they discovered a beautiful young woman living within, obviously able to survive underwater without drowning. Brought aboard their ship, the young woman was found to have gill-like slits in her neck and slight webbing between her fingers and toes. One of the men named the mysterious woman ‘Dolphin.' Dolphin couldn't survive away from the water for long and returned to the seas.

Garth proposes to Dolphin in AQUAMAN #56 [1999]
Dolphin gives Tempest an ultimatum in TITANS #47 [2003]

Later, Dolphin joined heroes Immortal Man, Animal Man, Congo Bill, Rick Flag, and Cave Carlson to thwart a scheme of the evil immortal, Vandal Savage. Immortal Man suggested the team remain together and they became known as the Forgotten Heroes. Dolphin remained with the team until its eventual breakup.

Dolphin & Aquaman

After that, Dolphin continued to roam the seas, and occasionally aided other heroes, including Animal Man. Dolphin then came into conflict with the evil Charybdis. She and Aquaman were able to defeat the villain, although it cost Aquaman his hand. Soon after this, Aquaman and Dolphin entered into a romantic relationship.

Soon, Aquaman went through soon emotional as well as physical changes. His appearance became more amphibian and his moods became more erratic. It was at this time that his relationship with Dolphin began to dissolve. The couple drifted apart. Although Aquaman returned to his true form, his life was further complicated by the return of his ex-wife, Mera.

Dolphin & Tempest

Shortly after this, Garth began a relationship with Dolphin. Initially, Garth and Dolphin concealed their relationship from Aquaman, unsure of what his reaction would be. Eventually, Aquaman learned of their relationship and gave them his blessing. Dolphin then discovered she was pregnant. Garth was happy at the news and proposed marriage. Garth and Dolphin were married in a traditional Atlantean ceremony with friends and family in attendance. Dolphin has since given birth to a son. Dolphin and Tempest's first child was named Cerdian by Aquaman as a gesture to the surface-country Cerdia, which had recently fallen under Atlantean control.

As Garth's obligations to the Titans increased, he seemed to have trouble balancing his family life with his dedication to the team. Dolphin rectified the situation by moving into the Titans Tower with Cerdian. But soon after, the Titans Tower was destroyed by enemy forces. To put a further strain on the situation, Tempest was almost killed by an addictive drug from a Chemical World. After these events, Dolphin insisted Garth retire from the Titans - and Garth reluctantly complied.

Garth moved his family to New Atlantis, where he was greeted with suspicion from the new rulers and placed under house arrest. Leaving his wife and small child behind, Tempest used his wizardry to escape Atlantis and sought Aquaman for help. Eventually, the sorcerers' rule was overturned and Atlantis was restored. Before its citizens could celebrate, Atlantis was attacked by the Spectre, who was driven mad when he lost his human host. As Spectre razed Atlantis to the ground, Tempest and several Atlantean mystics unsuccessfully tried to combat him. With Atlantis destroyed, only Tempests' tattered costumed was found.

Tempest later returned, but Dolphin and Cerdain's fate remains in question.

Dolphin is an Olympic level swimmer with enhanced strength and durability. She can also communicate with dolphins.

Atlantis

Long ago the city of Poseidonis constructed a dome to protect them from their barbaric neighbors. When a meteor submerged the city, the dome protected the inhabitants. The city's engineers stabilized the crystal dome to resist the inward force of the surrounding water. Later, when they were granted the ability to breathe water, the citizens elected to flood the city. Beneath Atlantis is a subterranean city unto itself, interbuilding support and most vehicular traffic. Above ground is a series of monorail and people movers. The Palace is connected by these tunnels to distant points of the city, but its security is paramount.
