The Terror Titans

A Legacy of Terror
The manipulative Clock King gathered together a team of teen legacy villains known as the Terror Titans for his own mysterious agendas. A sinister flip-side to the Teen Titans, these treacherous teenagers adopted the guises of former super-villains. Their initial membership included Dreadbolt, Copperhead, Persuader and Disruptor.
Clock King pushed his Terror Titans to capture the entire Teen Titans so he could sell the heroes to the Dark Side Club, a secret underground fight club. Kid Devil was duped and captured by Dreadbolt, while Miss Martian was detained by Disruptor.
Persuader, Copperhead and Dreadbolt then infiltrated Titans Tower and seemingly killed Ravager in the resulting melee. Ravager actually survived their attack and was able to rescue Kid Devil and Miss Martian with the help of Robin, Wonder Girl and Blue Beetle. The Titans faced a final confrontation with the Terror Titans in Clock King's time dimension, where the time tinkerer was stymied by Ravager, who possessed similar precognitive abilities. The Terror Titans were defeated, but Clock King was intrigued by Ravager and offered her a place on his team.
Terror Strikes
Ravager later arrived at the doorstep of the Dark Side Club, having quit the Teen Titans, and announced her intention to join Clock King and explore her precognitive powers. She proved to be an untrustworthy wild card, whose true motivations remained in question. This seemed to further intrigue Clock King, who saw Ravager as a fascinating new challenge.
Meanwhile, Clock King tasked his Terror Titans each with a specific challenge in an effort to make them better soldiers. His draconian manipulations were truly for his own sick amusement, as he watched each of his team members fall deeper into self-loathing and despair.
Clock King eventually created his own meta-human militia of brainwashed super-teens, and ordered them to cause senseless destruction in Los Angeles. It seemed that the creation of mayhem and violence was a source of entertainment for the bored temporal-powered mastermind. But once Ravager and MIss Martian freed the enthralled super-powered teens from Clock King's control, Clock King subsequently murdered Disruptor and abandoned the remaining Terror Titans, leaving them at the mercy of the heroes.
Dreadbolt, Copperhead and Persuader were initially captured, but later escaped and together vowed to one day exact retribution on the Clock King.

Ravager tracked down the Clock King in his time dimension, where she denounced his sick methods and left him brutally beaten. This only made him more captivated by her complicated and conflicted nature.
Dreadbolt, Copperhead and Persuader were initially captured, but later escaped and together vowed to one day exact retribution on the Clock King. Having abandoned his Dark Side Club headquarters, Clock King's current whereabouts (or whenabouts) are unknown.

Sean McKeever on the Clock King (courtesy of newsarama.com): "The Terror Titans were created by the Clock King as teen legacy villains. He gave them their suits, which have their powers. And his purpose is to use them for his own goals. And his M.O. is that he likes to create chaos out of order. He likes to build things that destroy. It's something that he enjoys immensely. He's really a Machiavellian, string-pulling kind of guy, and that's what his Terror Titans are for. And now that he's made himself more of a partner, almost, in the Dark Side Club, he's using them to round up teen superheroes to use in the arena to beat the tar out of each other."

The Clock King possesses the ability to see what is about to happen approximately 4.6692 seconds into the future, allowing him to anticipate an opponent's every move. He is also a technological genius, creating devices such as teleporters, communications jamming equipment, and even an anti-gravity platform, all of them modeled after timepieces.

Dreadbolt
Alias: Terry Bolatinsky |

Son Of A Super- Villain
Growing up as the son of a super-villain isn't easy. Just ask Terry Bolatinsky. When his father wasn't busy with his special effects projects, he used a super-suit of his own design to commit crimes as a C-list super-hitman known as Bolt. Terry's mother died soon after he was born, which led him to rely heavily on his father for emotional support - a role his father was not equipped to handle.
Early attempts to emulate his father often ended in tears. And as Terry became enamored with his father's exploits as Bolt, Larry Bolatinsky viewed his son as being "too soft" for the "family business" and grew to resent him for it. At best, Larry thought Terry could follow in his footsteps as a special effects artist.
Tale of Dread
But fate intervened when young Terry was approached by the Clock King, who offered Terry the chance to become a super-villain himself. Using a specially enhanced suit that allowed him to teleport and fire energy blasts, Terry became the legacy villain known as Dreadbolt.
After joining Clock King's group of Terror Titans, Dreadbolt infiltrated Titans Tower by pretending to be a fan of Kid Devil, only to dupe the unsuspecting hero into a trap. But Terry's next assignment proved his most difficult: Clock King instructed Dreadbolt to hunt down his own father and kill him.

Dreadbolt confronted his father on a rooftop, where his conscience gave him pause. This led Bolt to disown his son and label him a "sissy" and a failure. But Dreadbolt ultimately proved Bolt wrong when a burst of rage caused him to murder his own father. At first, Terry felt remorse at killing his own father; Soon, he only felt relief.
Meanwhile, Clock King created his own meta-human militia of brainwashed super-teens, and ordered them to cause senseless destruction in Los Angeles. But once Ravager and MIss Martian freed the enthralled super-powered teens from Clock King's control, only the Terror Titans stood to oppose a small army of meta-teen heroes. Clock King subsequently murdered Disruptor and abandoned the remaining Terror Titans, which led to their eventual defeat.
Dreadbolt, Copperhead and Persuader were initially captured, but later escaped and co-opted the former Dark Side Club headquarters. Together, they vowed to one day exact revenge on the Clock King.

Using his specially enhanced suit, he is able to teleport short distances instantaneously. The suit also contains an energy blaster that can be used as a weapon.

Disruptor II
Alias: Angelica Smith |

Disruptive Behavior
Angelica Smith's life of abandonment began after she took her first breath. Found as a baby in a trash can, Angelica was placed in a series of dilapidated group homes left to fend for herself. Hardened by life, young Angelica would bully the other children and steal their money. Her rage over her abandonment issues would also cause her to get into fights with other children.
Angelica was also placed in a series of foster homes, none of which lasted very long, probably due to Angelica's disruptive behavior. Enraged at the happiness shared by one set of foster parents, Angelica murdered the woman and tried to claim the man for herself. After spending some time in jail, Angelica was approached by the Clock King.
Playing on her feelings of abandonment, Clock King fabricated a story and told Angelica that she was the daughter of the two-bit criminal known as the Disruptor. Rescuing Angelica from a life of misery, Clock King gave her a super-powered uniform and persuaded her to join his Terror Titans as the new Disruptor.
Permanent Disruptions
After joining the Terror Titans, Angelica began a romantic affair with Clock King. For the first time in her sad life, she felt as if she found somewhere to belong.

Angelica's new "home" was threatened when Clock King took an interest in Ravager, who shared his precognitive abilities. Jealous of Ravager, Angelica constantly tried to turn Clock King and the other Terror Titans against her. Clock King eventually ordered Disruptor to leave Ravager alone, a seemingly impossible task for the vengeful Disruptor.
Meanwhile, Clock King created his own meta-human militia of brainwashed super-teens, and ordered them to cause senseless destruction in Los Angeles. But once Ravager and MIss Martian freed the enthralled super-powered teens from Clock King's control, only the Terror Titans remained allied with the temporal-powered mastermind. Disruptor tried to murder Ravager, an act that drew the ire of Clock King. For failing to follow his orders, Clock King subsequently murdered Disruptor and abandoned the remaining Terror Titans.

While wearing her high-tech suit, the Disruptor has the ability to "disrupt" the natural flow of things. This includes stopping electrical power and other forms of energy, as well as disrupting super-powers.

Persuader III
Alias: Elise Kimble |

An Axe To Grind
Young Elise Kimble adored her father. But her heart was hardened when he abruptly left both her and her mother. This caused friction between Elise and her mother, which continued into Elise's teen years.
As a high school student, Elise accepted her first "contract kill" from a student who had issues with one of the teachers. When her mother learned of her crime, Elise killed her as well.
The vicious teenager was approached by the Clock King, who fashioned Elise with a powerful Atomic Axe. Taking the name Persuader, Elise joined Clock King's Terror Titans, with the promise that one day she would be reunited with her father.
Axe Of Terror
Clock King eventually made good on that promise, and Elise had a tearful reunion with her estranged father. Their reunion was cut brutally short when Clock King murdered Elise's father right before her eyes. Clock King maintained that he had kept his promise, but also insisted that his murderous act would make Elise a stronger soldier.
Copperhead II
Alias: Nathan Price |

Cold Blooded
Nathan Price knew at an early age that there was something wrong with him. In his early teens, jealous Nathan drowned his baby brother in his bath tub. His parents' deep mourning only further angered Nathan, to the point where Nathan planned to kill his parents as well. Silently creeping into their room as they slept, Nathan intended to stabs his parents to death. But at the last moment, Nathan left the knife at the foot of their bed and left his home - never to return.
Feeling detached from humanity, Nathan lived on the streets earning money by prostituting himself. So sickened by his own actions, Nathan murdered his customers and stole their money without an ounce of remorse.
Tail of Terror
The down-and-out teen was approached by the Clock King to join his team of Terror Titans. Equipping Nathan with a super-powered suit, Nathan Price became the new Copperhead.
As a member of the Terror Titans, Nathan didn't interact much with his team mates. Clock King instructed lone Nathan to care for the meta-human known as TNTeena, who was injured during one of Clock King's underground Dark Side Club brawls. TNTeena grew to care for Nathan, as he helped nurse her back to health.
Clock King's final test for Copperhead was meant to discern whether Nathan had any conscience at all. He instructed Nathan to kill TNTeena. Nathan led TNTeena to believe they were escaping the Dark Side Club together, only to force TNTeena to overload her own powers and kill herself. As she begged Nathan for help with her last breath, Copperhead not only passed his final test, he also proved he had no conscience whatsoever.

Terror Titans Stand The Test of Clock King's Time

| Eddy Barrow's sketch of the Clock King |
Readers following Sean McKeever’s best selling run on “Teen Titans” love what the writer is doing with the re-imagined Clock King and his team of Terror Titans. So does DC Comics Executive Editor Dan Didio -- who also just so happens to edit the title himself -- as the legion of doom will debut in their own six-issue miniseries beginning in October.
McKeever, who is penning the Joe Bennett (“52” and “Checkmate”) illustrated miniseries, told CBR News “Terror Titans” is the next step in Clock King’s ‘big, crazy’ plans. “In ‘Teen Titans,’ Clock King pushed his Terror Titans, trying to get them to capture the entire Teen Titans team so that he could sell the heroes to the Dark Side Club, a sort of underground fight club run by people who believe they’re the avatars of the New Gods,” the writer explained. “In ‘Terror Titans,’ Clock King has taken up a more active role in the Dark Side Club and has brought his team of teen legacy villains along for the ride.
“He plans to further push and test his team, and he also has plans for Ravager, who left the Teen Titans at the end of #60.”
McKeever said essentially, it’s about creating chaos by way of control and order. “It’s about destruction, both for destruction’s sake as well as for the purpose of rebuilding. And it’s also about a whole lot of young metahumans beating the crap out of each other,” he offered. “Joe Bennett said he’d only draw the title if there was ‘lots of blood,’ and I think I’ve accommodated him pretty well, so far.”
 |
| Eddy Barrow's sketch of Dreadbolt |
The 36-year-old Appleton, Wisconsin native said it’s actually a bit easier writing a villain-centric series as opposed to one chalk full of superhero goodness. “There’s far more moral ambiguity to deal with. And I also just really enjoy writing people who are capable of terrible things,” he said. “It’s kind of like playing ‘Grand Theft Auto.’”
McKeever revealed that the series won’t overly tie-in to the “Teen Titans” ongoing or Grant Morrison and JG Jones’ “Final Crisis.” “We won’t be tying-in directly, but the aftereffects of this story will immediately be felt in ‘Teen Titans.’ We will also bring the Dark Side Club concept from ‘Seven Soldiers’ and ‘Final Crisis’ into its next evolutionary step, and that’s the central locale for the story, but no one needs to have read any of that, nor even the Terror Titans arc in ‘Teen Titans,’ to get what’s going on here.”
A technological genius, the Clock King possesses the ability to see what is about to happen approximately 4.6692 seconds into the future, allowing him to anticipate an opponent’s every move. And while he can predict what will happen, McKeever said it’s his unpredictability that makes him a great supervillain. “He’s unpredictable, he’s manipulative, and he clearly has a lot of secrets. He lives in a state of perpetual precognition, making him damn near impossible to surprise,” explained McKeever. “He lives in a dimension where time intersects but doesn’t age anything, so he could be very, very old, for all we know. All this adds together to make a highly intelligent, immensely powerful and thoroughly insane character.”
Ravager is the newest member of the Terror Titans, but McKeever isn’t ready to label her a villain. “I wouldn’t call Rose a villain. She marches to the beat of her own drum. Sometimes that beat puts her on the side of the angels, and other times it turns her into a hardened killer,” he said.
 |
| Eddy Barrow's sketch of Persuader |
So there is still good inside her? “Sure. As readers will learn from the outset, Rose is pretty clear about why she’s come to the Dark Side Club. It’s to do with her own precognition, and how it seems to resonate with Clock King’s,” revealed McKeever. “Don’t expect her to play nice with the Terror Titans, nor anyone else, for that matter.”
McKeever said he’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite Terror Titan -- with candidates including Copperhead, Dreadbolt and Persuader -- because they are all his “beautiful, twisted children,” and so he loves them equally. He added, “At the start of #2-5, the readers will get to see the ‘origin story’ of each character, and give you more of a sense of who they are and why they’re part of this band of sociopathic killers.”
Fuelling the writer’s love of the characters is how they’re being drawn by Joe Bennett. “Joe brings energy, amazing emotion and wonderful clarity in his layouts,” said McKeever. “He’s also breaking down a lot of the fight scenes himself, per his request. So we’re doing certain pages plot style, where I’ll describe the action and he’ll decide how he wants to display it. It makes a lot of sense since I’d probably only hamper him, visually.”
With news out of Comic-Con International that Dwayne McDuffie’s Milestone character Static would be joining Teen Titans, CBR News asked McKeever if he would be active in “Terror Titans.” “The Teen Titans will be gaining a few new members in the months to come, but that will happen in ‘Teen Titans’ itself,” teased McKeever. “Of course, it wouldn’t be a shock to anyone if at least one character in this miniseries winds up signing up at Titans Tower.”
As for what else is coming up in “Teen Titans” in the months ahead, McKeever revealed, “We’re roughed out through June 2009 right now, so let’s see they’re will be new and old and downright ancient. They’re will be red and blue and green. They’re will be changes and upgrades. And enemies and teammates where they’re least expected.
“And Wonderdog will be the New Character of the Year.”
“Terror Titans” #1 is scheduled for October 1.
