Silas Stone tells the tragic tale of how Cyborg was born
in NEW TEEN TITANS #7 [1981] |
|
Maude and Tucker Stone later had a son named Silas. Silas grew up embarrassed of his parent's unconventional lifestyle. Silas, instead of the flashy world of stage acts, gravitated toward the sciences, immersing himself in study. Silas became an overachiever and eventually devoted his life to science. As Silas grew up, Maude and Tucker traveled more and more leading Silas to become estranged from his parents.
Silas eventually met and fell in love with a fellow scientist, Elinore, and the loving couple got married.
Silas and Elinore soon gave birth to a son, Victor . Victor Stone grew up surrounded by science. As the only son of research scientists Silas and Elinore Stone, Vic was pushed and trained to follow in his parents' footsteps. While experimenting on ways to boost human intelligence, they used Vic as a subject, which bestowed him with an IQ of 170. Silas and Elinore Stone's pursuit of science unfortunately blinded them to their son's need for a normal childhood.
Children of the Sun
Raymond Dark - who would later form the villainous Children of the Sun - worked with fellow scientist Silas Stone at Westchester Sciences. Dark proposed use of nuclear power, but Silas thought his measures were too unstable. Dark went over his head and accused Silas of being a communist sympathizer. Under a cloud of suspicion, Silas was forced to leave Westchester Science, and he assumed a job at S.T.A.R. Labs with his wife, Elinore.
Vic Grows Up
As Vic became a teenager, he got into trouble when he began hanging around with the wrong crowd, which included a youth named Ron Evers. Victor remained Ron's friend because of his loneliness and lack of attention from his father.

Thanks to Elinore's persuasion, Silas allowed Vic to attend public high school, where he immediately began making friends and showing great athletic potential. Vic met his first girlfriend, Marcy Reynolds, and trained very hard in the hopes of going to the Olympics. Silas was angered by Victor's athletic plans because he wanted his son to pursue a career in the sciences; he did not think in terms of what Victor might want. This disagreement created a large rift between Vic and Silas and laid the groundwork for future tensions.
Tragedy
One day Vic happened to visit his parents at S.T.A.R. Labs. They were working on two projects: a long-range inter-dimensional study and observation project, and the development of cybernetic body parts for physically disabled soldiers. While observing another dimension, Silas accidentally let a blob-like creature slither through the dimensional barrier. The entity killed Elinore and critically wounded Vic before Silas could activate the recall button and send it back.
Determined not to let his son meet the same fate his wife did, a desperate and unauthorized Silas used the untested cybernetic technology to rebuild Vic's body with a frame of enforced molybdenum steel, special polymers and plastics. Vic survived, and Cyborg was born. Angry at his father and bitter about his fate, Vic ostracized himself from society by moving to Hell's Kitchen, a bad part of town where he felt a freak such as himself would fit in. It was here that Raven found Vic and asked him to join the New Teen Titans.
In appreciation of Vic's new friends and the feeling of purpose they gave to his son, Silas Stone built Titans' Tower. Unknown to Vic, the accident that killed his mother also gave Silas radiation poisoning and he was slowly dying. When Vic recognized the depths of his father's love, the two men reconciled. Silas died a short time later, but Vic stayed with him until the end.

Vic Stone meets Sarah Simms in NEW TEEN TITANS #8 [1981]. |
|
As Vic Stone mused his new cybernetic form, he was struck by a baseball. As the child retrieved it, Vic was surprised that the boy didn't recoil at the sight of him. Instead, the handicapped boy marveled at Vic's metal prosthetics, whereas his were plastic. Vic then unexpectedly became friends with Sarah Simms, a teacher of West Side School for the Handicapped, and her class of handicapped students. The children continued to look up to Vic, who had his own metal prosthetics,' of a sort. Vic and Sarah Simms remained close friends. Although each of them danced around the idea of a romantic relationship, this would never come to pass.
Vic and Sarah's friendship was shaken when she was kidnapped by Deathstroke, the Terminator in an attempt to get to the Titans. Vic felt responsible, and Sarah was upset by the event. Vic and Sarah later came to terms with this and resumed their friendship.
Later, Sarah Simms was accosted on the street by Mark Wright, who insanely persisted in claiming to be her fiance after she has told him repeatedly that they were never more than friends and co-workers. Mark, clearly unbalanced, dragged Sarah into a nearby sporting goods store, which he took it over at gunpoint, wounding a cashier who tried to stop him. Using a rifle from the store merchandise, Mark held off the police, who surrounded the shop, while Sarah took advantage of his distraction to place a whispered phone call to Titans Tower. Cyborg, Changeling, and Raven, the only Titans on hand at the moment, arrived almost immediately, but their initial efforts to enter the store and disarm Mark met with failure. Finally, confused and surrounded, Mark put down his weapon and collapsed into Raven's arms, surrendering.

NEW TEEN TITANS
(second series) #13 [1985]. |

Sarah's life was without much incident following her hostage situation with Mark Wright. She continued her friendship with Vic, and even attended Donna Troy's wedding as his date.
Following that, Vic's adventures left him little time for Sarah. Meanwhile, a new man entered her life: a co-worker at the West Side School for the Handicapped by the name of Gary Sellers. Sarah and Gary didn't plan on a relationship, but found themselves falling in love. Sarah initially was hesitant to tell Vic, and he found out by accident. He was angry at first, but later accepted they were not meant to have a romantic relationship just a close friendship. Eventually, Gary left Sarah and she found herself single again. She flirted with the idea of a relationship with Joe Wilson (Jericho), but nothing ever came of it.
Sarah Simms remained a friend to Vic Stone and the Titans, although they have lost touch over the years.

Marv Wolfman, on the possibility of a Vic/Sarah Simms romance: "At first I thought of it. And then decided there was nothing wrong with a good healthy friendship that is nor based on a sexual background between them. I received a letter that sort of helped me change my mind, from a black leader who felt that we had seen a lot of interracial relationships, but we haven't seen that many good, solid black-black relationships to show that a black hero doesn't always go together with a white heroine and vice-versa. And that sort of got me thinking. That came very early in the relationship, that it made a lot more sense in terms of their needs to be very good friends. He has no girl friend who he is totally in love with in a sexual way at this time. He's just very good friends with her, And that in itself is a slightly different relationship. "
